What I need most at present is access to
the records of Castle Garden. This was the point of entry for immigrants
before Ellis Island was opened. Castle Garden, also known at times as Castle
Clinton, still stands in the Battery Park area of lower Manhattan. This
structure was originally built as a fortress off the tip of Manhattan, but
when the land was filled in, it came to be part of Manhattan.
If anyone reading this page has information on where the records from Castle
Garden are located, and how one might access them, I'd be quite interested.
Most, if not all, of my ancestors entered the United States via the port of
New York, at Castle Garden.
